Why Wall Anchors Fail—and How to Avoid Damage

Practical home maintenance advice from Lewes Home Works

You hang a shelf. It looks great. Everything is level, the screws are tight, and you're feeling pretty good about your handiwork.

Then, a few weeks later, the shelf starts leaning.

Or worse, you hear a crash from the other room.

The problem? Often, it's not the shelf or the screws. It's the wall anchors.

Wall anchors are designed to help support items when you can't attach them directly to a wall stud. But choosing the wrong anchor—or installing the right one incorrectly—can lead to damaged drywall, loose fixtures, and unexpected repairs.

Here are five common reasons wall anchors fail.

1. Using the Wrong Type of Anchor

Not all wall anchors are created equal.

The small plastic anchors included with many household products may work for lightweight decorations, but they aren't necessarily suitable for heavier shelves or mirrors.

Common options include:

\nPlastic expansion anchors: Generally intended for lighter applications in compatible wall materials.
\nSelf-drilling drywall anchors: Convenient for certain light- to medium-duty installations, depending on the product.
\nToggle bolts: Use a mechanism behind hollow walls to distribute the load over a larger area.
\nMolly bolts: Expand behind the wall to provide support when installed correctly.

Each type has limitations. The best choice depends on the wall material, the item's weight, and how the load will be applied.

Homeowner tip: Don't assume the anchors supplied with a product are appropriate for every wall.

2. Overestimating the Anchor's Weight Capacity

An anchor package might advertise a 50-pound or 75-pound rating.

That doesn't automatically mean you can safely hang an item of that weight in every situation.

Weight ratings depend on factors such as the wall material, installation method, direction of force, and manufacturer's testing conditions.

A shelf presents a particular challenge because its contents sit away from the wall. That creates leverage that can pull outward on the upper fasteners.

Homeowner tip: Consider the weight of the shelf and everything you plan to put on it. Follow the mounting hardware manufacturer's instructions and ratings for your specific application.

3. Installing Anchors in Damaged Drywall

Drywall is useful, but it isn't indestructible.

If an anchor has already pulled out, the surrounding drywall may be cracked or weakened.

Simply installing a larger anchor in the same damaged hole isn't always a reliable solution.

Depending on the damage, the correct repair might involve relocating the mounting point, repairing the drywall, or attaching the item to structural framing.

Homeowner tip: If an anchor spins freely or the drywall crumbles around it, stop and evaluate the mounting location before trying again.

4. Missing the Wall Studs

For many heavier installations, fastening directly into properly located structural framing is preferable to relying on drywall anchors alone.

Wall studs provide a more substantial attachment point when suitable fasteners and installation methods are used.

However, locating studs isn't always as straightforward as it seems.

Stud finders can produce confusing readings near pipes, wiring, insulation, or changes in wall construction.

And not every wall is built the same way.

Homeowner tip: Verify your mounting location before drilling. Never assume an area is free of electrical wiring or plumbing simply because a stud finder doesn't detect anything.

5. Ignoring How the Item Will Be Used

A decorative picture and a frequently used towel bar experience very different forces.

A towel bar gets pulled. A coat hook may hold several heavy jackets. A shelf may gradually accumulate books, dishes, or other objects.

Repeated movement and outward pulling forces can loosen mounting hardware over time.

That's why installation should account for more than the item's empty weight.

Homeowner tip: Think about how the item will actually be used, not just how much it weighs when first installed.

When Should You Call a Professional?

Some lightweight wall decorations are straightforward DIY projects.

But professional installation may be worthwhile when you're mounting:

Large or heavy mirrors
Floating shelves
Wall cabinets
Frequently used grab points or hardware
Items requiring multiple precisely aligned mounting points

Safety-critical items, including grab bars and other supports intended to bear a person's weight, require appropriate structural attachment and manufacturer-compliant installation—not ordinary drywall anchors.

The goal isn't simply to get something hanging on the wall.

It's to make sure it stays there.

A Small Installation Can Make a Big Difference

At Lewes Home Works, we help homeowners throughout Lewes and Rehoboth Beach with shelving, mirrors, household hardware, and other small installations.

We take the time to consider the wall, the mounting hardware, and how the finished installation will be used.

Because a shelf that looks level today should still be level tomorrow.

Small jobs. Done right.
